Minister's Story About Sugar Shortage

NAPIER, Feb.. 8. The shortage of sugar in, parts of. New Zealand, particularly in the Soutli Island, before Christmas, was the Subject of eomment by the1 Minister of Commerce, Mr. Nordmeyer, when addressing the Master Grocers' confer--ence this after n.oon. . > The Minister said that when the rationing of sugar was to be lifted last year, the Merchants' Fe'deration 'wfote" th'e Government about action necessary to secure adequate supplies, and he h'ad made a reply. fIf the Merchanits' Federation wanted a more definite assurance about supplies than was given in my letter^ then the Government should have been informed and further consideration could have been given," said Mr. Nordmeyer. "If the Government haqi known the merchants did not intend to place orders, thus leaving the public scrambling for sugar when they wanted it. Just. before Christmas, the Government could have done something to shift supplies so they would be available when and where required. Instead,' the Government was not .advised but is now being blained by the Merchants' Federation. There may be some blame on the Government ' but certainly more on the merchants. " •
