Christchurch Dabbles Its Feet in Avon
CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 8. The heat wave in Christchurch eontintied today With the maximum teinperatUre only .2 degrees lower than yesterday's maximum of 93.7 ddgrees which was the hottest day for 28 years Yesterday was the fourth hottest day since recordings began in Christchurch Sudden deatlis have been reported and it is thought the heat may be a factor. Thousands swarmed the beaches last night and today in an effort to keep cool and hundreds sat on the banks of the Avon and dabbled theif feet during the lunch hour. There has been a record consumption of water ih the city and restrictions have been imposed in the boroughs outside the city.- Ice cream and soft drink saies have never been so high. Sevei'al business preffiises dosed down and the. pro'prietOrs sent their staffs to the - beaches dufing the day. Today 's maximum was reached just after noon but in contrast to yesterday it was not sustained and by 3.30 p.m. the teruperature had dropped to 84.-S degrees. A hortlieast breeze tkis aftyjrnoon had a marked COoling efiect.
