Fixing Sites for Empire Games Events
AUCKLAND, Feb. 7. Possible places for holding tbe various sports of tbe 1950 British Empire Games in Auckland, were - discussed at a meeting of tbe organising committee for tbe Games tonigbt. Tbe director of tbe organisation, Mr. A. Moon, said an early decision on the matter had been requested by tbe New Zealand Olympic and British Empire Games Association y-biqb wisbed to specify tbe various plaees in tbe programme of events now being prepared for despatoh to overseas countries. The cbairman of the organising eommittee, Mr. C. Rex Moore, said most sports would be beld in tbe places speciiied by Auckland in its application for permission to hold the Games. Eden Park was considered the only area in Auckland suitable for - staging tbe athletic events aild a similar belief was beld in regard to tbe Western Springs stadium for cycling and tbe Town Hall for wrestling. In some of tbe other sports, bowever, the respeetive national associations were not yetsatislied as to whicb site would prove tbe fairest conditions for the eompetitions. Until decisions bad been reaehed in these cases it was desirable to eonform to places already suggested. A report on tbe meeting with the Eden Park Board of Control was presented by Mr. II. L. Towers, an expert on the siting of athletic traclcs. Mr. Towers said be had approaebed tbe board with plans for several different traclcs eacb requiring some alterations to the ground plan at tbe park. Tbe most suitable track was oue requiring tbe biggest alterations. "In spite of , tbetextent of the alterations required, tbe board immediately agreed to provide tbe best track possible,''' Mr. Towers said.
