Following a briglit mornixig, dull weather and rain iu the late afternoon tnade conditions diflicult for riflemen at the national chainpionship meetmg whicli began on the Trentham range today. tScores in the non-ciiampionship j opening match in the morning match, | started niainly to acquaint oompetitors with conditions, pointed to some keen competition when the chainpionship series proper was begun with the Wellington match of 10 shots at 500 and (100 yards. Possibles wero registered at 500 yards by P. Martel (Opaki), J. E. Bishop (Ashburton), and R. H. Hunt (Suburbs) as weil as several 49 ;s. Conditions then deteriorated in tiie bad light. Scores of 48 by G. A. Nicholi (Sydenham) which enaliled Martel to niu the match on the count back, and by R. J. Cammock (Wairoa), were ex- • eptionally good at 600 yards. The entry of 390 for the chaxnpionship and 49 for the service series, is the largest for many ycars and includes many previous champions such as the record liolder, W. N. Masefleid (Blenheim) who has won the champion belt on more occasions- than any other competitor. Oi the Australian party of 14, the most successful in the A grade tolay was S.
