Bowling Centre's Singles Tourney Opens

The Wellington Bowling Centre's , open singles tournament started yesterday with a record entry of 152 ■players. The weather was fine in the morning, except for a norcheriyi wind which blew in gusts and re-| quired judging. Tne greens were fast in the forenoon, but a shower about 2.30 p.m. slowed thern up, and j upset players' ju'dgment of pace1 till the wind dried them up again. Play yesterday was on the two-| life principal. P. Devine (Petone) , W. H. Dillicar 1 (Khandallah), W. J. Hart (Is.and Bay), W. S. Sorensen (Kilbirnie), H. B. Walker (Kilbirnie) , A. R. Hastings (Newtown), A. D. Watts (Hataitai), E. Butterworth (Naenae), and W. Christian (Paekakariki) won all the four games they played. These players were not matched in the fifth round of play and enter the post section play with their two lives. The tournament continued on the Hutt Club's green at 9 a.m. today and it is hoped to reach the semi-finals, which, with the final, will be played on the Wellington Club's green tomorrow. Yesterday section A was played at Hutt, section B at Petone, section C at Miramar, section D at Naenae, section E at Wellington, section F at Haitaitai, section G at Thorndon and section H at Karori. Sections J and JA were played at the Paraparaumu green, detailed results being: —

ON THE GREEN AT OTAKI The bowling greens in Otaki were in popular demand at the weekend and some keen games took place in beautiful weather. On Saturday the Otaki club held a tournament when the procee'ds were donated to tne Sports Queen's campaign. Four medals were given by club members, Messrs. R. Kearns, E. T. Bartosh, L. Walsh and J. Southgate, and competition was keen throughout the tournament. j The winning team was W. Bahey,! S. Simcox, J. Te Puni and R. Eaton, who in the semi-final prevailed over ! a rink skipped by W. S. Hughes. In tne final they defeated Venn, of Khandallah. The annual visit to Central Club, Petone, took place at the weekerid, when the horne team triumphe'd over three rinks from the Otaki club. R.S.A. Tourney. Otaki, Otaki Railway and Waikanae greens were a scene of great activity on Sunday, when the annual tournament organised by the local branch of the Returned Services' Association was held, 47. rinks taking part. , Walker (Island Bay), with four|

wins, was the. winner of section B played on the "Otaki Railway green. Section A, played at Otaki, saw a play-olf between Venn (Khandallah) and Snefling (Seatoun), with tne former the victor. At Waikanae, Wilkie (Naenae) was the winner of section C. Wilkie then played Walker in the j semi-final at Otaki Railway, and the latter prevailed. Walker's game with Venn for the final saw enthusiasrn at a high pitch, with both players four all on the fourth head. I Walker won the tourney with his ilast bowl, on the fifth head, and with the light fading fast, thus [winning the trophy for the second year in succession.
