Diary Returned

When Mr. W. R. Gouldsmith, of Christchurch, was wounded at Mersa Matruh while fighting with the Second N.Z.E.F. he lost, among other items of kit, a diary for 1942. Early last year a Christchurch girl whose name was in the diary received a letter from Josef Menselowski, in the British zone of Germany, who stated he was in Africa with the 21st Panzer Division. He had picked up the diary and, carrying it in his breast pockst, had had a bomb splinter deflected by the hook. The Christchurch girl sent Menselowski Mr. Gouldsmith's address, and the diary is now back With its owner, complete. with a small piece. of shrapnel . and a deep cut which it made in the corner.
