BATTLE OF THE THEATRES

The erection of the Regenfc Theatre in 1926 saw the commencement of a battle between it and the proprietor of another theatre in Queen Street (opposite McMinii Motors) . A fire in the old "bu'il'di ing, , however, put an end to what had' promised to be' an interesting • affair, recalled Mr. Jenkin'S. Declining to diseuss some of t.he sidelights of council meetings over the years, Mr. Jenkins said that he thought this would bring in personalities and might be unfair. He preferred also to omit mention of his personal activities in the toWn, ibut it is known that h'e has for the past 18 years been parishioh1ers' churchwarden for St. Mary's Anglican Church, the secretary of the Patriotic Committee during the wai* and an ardent member and supporter of the St. John Ambulanee Division. An accomplished pianist, he was accompanist for the operatic society and choral society of the old days, being also for a time conductor of the latter organisation. He has always been ayailable as a pianist for concerts during the war and has continued to be as helpful as possible in that capacity. I Mr. Jenkins take'S a keen interest in the development of the borough , and has a deep faith in the future iof the town, which he considers is ;a bright one. Levin's citizens who share this view will congratulate Mr. Jenkins on his 25 years bf efficient and praiseworthy serviee to the ^community.
