Two Big Grass Fires in Otago
DUNEDIN, Feb. 3. Large areas of grass land, pastures and hedges were burnt yesterday when two fires broke out at uoon, one between Pukeuri Junction and ililder thorpe in North Otago and the other at Karitane, about 25 miles north of Dunedin. In each case nearly 100 men were mobilised to iiglit the flames which were fanned by strong winds. After a two-hour battle at Pukeuri, the fireiighters brouglit the out break under eontrol. At Karitane volunteers worked for four hours before the fire was mastered. At one stage the township itself was threatened and three houses on the outskirts were narrowly saved. It is thought that the Karitane fire originated from the dumping of refuse by occupiers of cribs. The Pukeuri outbrealc is regarded as oue of the worst in the history of the district and is believed to have been caused by gparks from passing trains.
