MR. EDWARD HAYES
Many friends and representatives of all the organisations with wftich the late Mr. Edward Hayes, of Queenwood Road, was connected attended his funeral, which was held at Levin on , Wednesday. Among the numerous floral tributes were wreaths from the Levin Fire Boafd, Levin Volunteer Fire Brigade, Central Bowling Club and the Holy Name Society. Many messages of sympathy were received from all parts of New Zealand. Mr. Hayes was on active service for three years in World War I. All his working life was spent with the New Zealand Railways in various parts of Otago and later at Woodville and Taihape. On his retirement 10 years ago he came to reside at Levin, where he took an active interest in the life of the community. For a number of years he was the Government. represen1 tative on the Levin Fire Board, having for a long period previously served as a member of voluntary fire brigades in the various dis- ' tricts in which he lived. Over a space of more than 40 years, bowling was his main recreation and he was a prominent member ofi?the Levin Central Bowling Club, both as a player And an administrative officer, being past president of the club. Of a quiet and unassuming disposition, Mr. Hayes was a man of sound judgment and humanitarian outlook, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
