New Hostel For Women Students
• Thanks to the spirited, far-seeing .enterpnse of the Student Christian Movement, suppor^ed by generous jWell-wishers, • a limited number of young women from country centres, j students of Victor.a University jCol.ege, will have very comfortable j and congenial accommodation in a new nostel, named the Helen Lowry Hal', in Karori, which will jopen on February 23. This will J bring ease of mind to paren s who iknow about the difficulties and disjadvantages of ordinary "rooming" •in congested Wellington. The Wellington district council of the New Zeaiand Student Christian Movement signed tne lease of a spacious residential building, which can take 32 students." A board of management will appoint a warden who will be responsible for contfol of the Scaif and for the welfare of residents. Every endeavour will be ma'de to ehsure that nourishing and appetising meals are served. ' As the board considers this vitally impor*ant, it has fitted up a modern kitchen with ever'y possibie convenience. It is proposed • to serve Ibreakfast, light lunch and'dinnor. Facilities will be available for girls j to make tea and coffee. A large uaun'dry is provided for the residents.' personal use. Household laundry will be sent out. There are large lounges, with open fires, many windows with spleridid views, good lighting and new colourful furnishings. Already, some students have "batched" in the hostel and have iielped to tidy up the extensive grounds. The management is concerned wKh giving students far inore than good bed and board. The ideal is the establishment of a happy community of women students, thorough'y interested in mutual Welfare. Of course, there is no profit motive for the Helen Lowry HaT. The fees are on a moderate scale, enough to help the enterprise to pay its way. Full jnformation is available on application to the board's secretary, 16; Newcombe Creccent, Karoi'i, Wellington, W.3.
