ROMNEYS IN DEMAND

Gcad Prtefis At Horowhenua , Ram Fair High . standards for Romney sheep were set at the. Horowhenua A. and P. Association's, annual ram fair conduoted_ at Lo-vin yesterday oy Me srs. Abraham and Williams •L/d., q,nd tne New Zealand Loan and. Mercantile Agency Co., in c'onjunction with association. officials. There was a large attendance of buyers from all parts of the area between Hunterville and Plimmerton, with district farmers. strongly represented. More than 400 rams were offered, comprising, 182' Romneys and 223 Southdowns. The Romney' entry came forward in excellent conditition throughout and sold well. The inspector of Romneys, Mr. H. Voss, of Longburn, tord a. representative of "The Chronicle" that he had not seen 'such a good run in this parbicular line for many years. He predicted better days for Romneys in the district, adding that an indiQation was seen in the fact that only seven from the large offering. had been rejecte'd as too poor in quality. Prices remained high throughout and were in advance of vendors' expectations. There was an oVer-supply of Southdowns and the lack of inspection was evident in the poor quality of some of the offering, tnese being passed in or rejected by the buyers. However, any Southdown showing quality sold well. The first flock of Rock Southdowns sold readily, but in the second run prices slumped to. as low as four gqineas. Top price for the fair and for the section was secured b'y Mr. J. A. Kilsby, of Ohau, for a show c)ass stud Romney, which was sold to Mr. J. E. Honore, of Levin, foy 36 guineas. Mr. Kilsby also sold a shbw class ram to N. P. Neilsen and Son, of Tiakitahuna, for 33 guineas. Top price in the Southdown section was * 32 gns., paid by Mrs, G. M.
