MAORI CHILDREN SAVE FOUR MEN
AUCKLAND, Jan. 30. Two young Maori children in a dinghy rescued four men who were in difficnlties in the 'river near tjie Taupo vvharf yesterday morning. - - * Mr. G. West, '"of 'Greenmeadows, Napier, dived off the wharf and attempted to swim the river. Half way across he was in difficulties and called for help. Mr. R. Annon, of Napier, ; dived in and swam to his assist.ahee but hlso got into difficnlties. Dr. D. Rickard and -Mr. H. W. Dow ling, of Napier., then swam out. The current was too strong for the three reseuers to bring West to shore. and ali were carried about 150 yards down stream. A boy, aged 12, and his siater^ aged 10, jumped into a dinghy on the oppo site bank and rowed to theNi four struggling men and towed them back to the wharf. Dr. Rickard said their position had become grim by the time tlie boat reached them.
