PauhJ" Len " Ove'rend; . of Levin, pleaded -guilty to a charge of assaulting Owen Jones at Otaki on ipeceniber 13. Sergeant W- S. Hughes told the court that Overeird had gone to Jones' place and an argument had ensued, Jones being struck on the .mouth. The assault was deliberate. Jones, continued the Sergeant, was the bigger man and could have dealt with defendant had he so desired, but he had not retaliated. Defendant stated that a difference had arisen between his mother-in-law and Jones over his (defendant's) children, and he had been asked to speak to Jones. He had called and asked Jones what the troub^e was, and Jones had grabbed him by the shoulder and said, "Get out." Jones kept on saying "Get out." "We went out on to the footpath, where Jones used bad language." He admitted striking Jones, warning him that "you have laid your hands on me and you are going to get one back." The bench took the view' that, there. had been some kind of provo- 1 catiori, and defendant- was con-j victed and ordered to pay 10s, : court costs 10s and witness' ex- : penses 12s. I a. D. T. Webster was charged with 1 driving a motor vehicle at an . excessive speed. Traffic Inspector C.' L. Davis stated that Webster had speeded up to pass his car, and on checking Webster's speed he found that he was keeping it at 50 m.p.h. Visibility was fair and there was, considerable traffic following a race J meeting. Defendant pleaded guilty and admitted passing the inspec-( tor at 50 m.p.h. He was fined £li with costs 12s. ! charge was brought foPowing an , accident which occurred at Waikanae on December 10 at 2.45 a.m. Defendant was driving from Napier to Wellington and haa crashed into a telegraph pole and been severely injured. He pleaded guilty by letter, admitting that he had gone to s1eep. He had been the on'.y occupant of the car. A fine of 30s,. with 10s costs, was imposed.
