Weraroa Tennis Notes

"Double Fault")

(By

After a lapse over the holidays the inter-club games were again continued over the weekend. Inthe match with St. Joseph's some interesting and close games were seen, St. Joseph's proving the vic-

tors by three games although sets were equal eight each. The club held a handicap singles tournament on Sunday, and a very good day was spent. Some surprises were registered by improving players over the more experienced ones, which added to the interest which prevailed throughout the tournament. After a very close game in the finals of the men's games, D. White, who recently won the. junior championship in Palmerston . North, was successful in vanquish\ing his opponent Les. Palmer, who played a really good game but Don appears to be improving all the time, and will take some heading off. Of the other players, Gra'aani Palmer, a junior player this year. is headed for better things, as he played a game which would put some of the senior players in the Shade. Robert Cuff another junior showed great promise, and he had Stan Sharpe scratching his head in order to make sure of his points. Jim White was unlucky in meeting his brother in his first match as he has made steady progress this year. Lawrie Palmer and Les. Leger have lost none of their bulldog tactics and are not beaten until the final point. Our president had a close call with Doug. Forster, I think too much work is slowing him up. Eddie Lyons couid take a fev/ : lessons from Graham and Robert, as he is very inconsistent in feis matches. H. Williams although

l " - - • lacking practice played a very good , match, and will soon be one to be Teckoned with. J. JohnSoh plays a steady gailre, and has developed a good" service. The final between Mrs. Brand ancl Mrs. Elliott resulted in a win for Mrs. Elliott. The latter proved the better player, and will take some beating in future matches. j ;Mrs. Brand seems to have lost heri f ormer clash, but may have ' had a day off. Mrs. Les. Palmer went ' unfier to P. ' Hanson and seemed to be beaten by the better player. ' Another surprise resulted in Mrs. 1 ■ L. Leger going down to a first year player in B. Vernon who played a; very steady game. Mrs. Leger: seemed -to ioose her match by going ■ into the net too Soon. J. Vernon

piayea a gooa game ana wm improve but found Mrs. Brand too good. Mrs. Tyree another first year player put up a very good show against Mrs. Elliott, and has improved her play considerably. S. Stevens was unfortunate in meeting one with more experience but has the makings of a good player. U. Mackay went under to Mrs. P. Dey. who with her steady style of play seems to find Una out with her li'king for faster play. Mrs. C. palmer is one who can play a good game with the rest. of them, and uses her knowledge o£ the game to perfection,
