Reps. Take Prized Cup From Southern Hawke's Bay

"Not Out")

(By

Congratulations to our represen- 1 tatives on their success. For three . years, Southern Hawke's Bay Cricket Association have held the, Goldfinch and Cousins' Cup and each year Horowhenua have 1 attempted to lift it but ,were not ' successful until last Saturday when they defeated the holders at Dannevirke by 83 runs to 72. H. Rice was the outstanding Horowhenua player, being top scorer with 22 and taking five wickets for 13 runs — eertainlv a eood dnuh'e.

In the club cricket last Saturday, Shannon further increased tneir lead by the defeat of Foxton — the team in second place. I always thought Foxton was a fairly strong batting side, but evidently the Shannon attack was too strong for they could only muster 49 runs. Weraroa defeated Old Boys mainly through the efforts of Wilson and Nichol. Old Boys had collected 90 runs and Weraroa were four down for about 30 when these two batsmen commenced their partnership, but both men waited until the bowling became tired and then commenced to collect the runs being still together when Old Boys' total was past. Nichol, then was out in going for a dip while Wilson, after adding a few quick runs, retired with 68 to his credit. On the Levin Park Domain, Levin massed th'e great ic-tal of 320 runs in ahout two and a third hours. Admittedly the bowling was below standard, but nevtrtheless to collect that total in the time was a grand elfort. The century making is certainly a weekly affair and this time it is congratulations to W. Galloway for his 105 (not out). He has been having a number of good scores lately and I should say his aggregate for the Season is as good as anyone's. It is very pleasing indee'd to see how- the College boys stick to it even in such a one-sided game as last Saturday. It is a great pity that a master is not available during the holidays for the boys were doing well and the bowling woulcl •have hrought better results if there had been someone there to "keep them up." The boys' ages range from 14 to 17 years and an aduii playing with them gives them that added confidence. Their bowlei's, as I mentioned. failed through being too short in length while their batting lacks mainly confidence and I think any team that is chasing 320 runs would show that. D.orne, the College opener, is a good f>oy who watches the ball right on to the hat. If he maintains his interest in the game he will become a very useful opener. Lang, a young boy shows much promise and will improve greatly with more experience. Southcombe deserves praise for the way he held his end. In fact all the College boys deserve praise for their keenness, their a'oility and for the good they are doing for cricket. Of the Levin bowiers, H. Baumber was the most impressive. K. Hudson came out with tne hest average but he bowled too many short ones from which more experienced batsmen w^ould have collected many runs. - Finally, I see that captains are still not giving the umpire positicn the thought it deserves and incompetent umpires are still taking the field. Cricketers — remember February 16 — all details will be advertised in "The Chronicle." . -
