Looked On While Thief Robbed Bar
WELLING-TON, Jan. 26. Customers in a bar of the Royal Oak Hotel, Wellington, unwittingly looked on this afternoon while a thief coolly collected ahout £13 from caMi registers hehind the counter. A group of three men was standing at the har when a stranger joined them. He talked for a while before announcing: "Well, I suppose I had better "go and do some work." His work amounted to leaping over the har for a lightning transaction with the -nearest cash register while the bannan on duty at that section was away for a niinutw. With hanknotes in his hand, the man opened the next cash register in line, took some more money and headed for the door with another pretty leap over the bar. There was another barman present but he was busy iyith customers fur- i ther along the har. He heard the cash register hells ring but thought it was the other barman working. As the thief operated, one of the ■onlookers commentcd that for all -they knew they might he witnessing a daylight robbery. They were and the police are anxious to communicate with the missing man.
