Fruit Market Takes More Cheerful Tone

Townsend and Faul, Ltd., fruit and produce merchants, Weli, lington, report that during the past week the market has^aken on a brighter- and more cheerful outlook, values ,for peaches, plums, nectarines and apricots having greatly inoreased. There is also a strong demand for firm red glass- ! house tomatoes, . choice outside j varieties also being keenly sought after. ' at attractive values. The* first consignment pf- hothouse - grapes arrived this week and opened up to a very interested audience, the price ''being 4s per 1b. Cherries have heen in very short supply and consignments ; are strongly 'recommended. In tlie vegetable market most lines have been rafher 'dull with the exception of green peas, whicb. have realised up to'-ls per lb., an'd stringless bea-ns to lld per lb. there is a strong enquiry for choice eaulifiower. Light yardings of poultry have been offered and the results of these saies have proved most advantageous to consignors. In the flower section gladioli and carnations have been . realising most attractive values, and thsre is a keen inquiry for all varieties. Quotations are: — Fruit: Peaches, trays, 3s 6d to 7s 3d; halves,' 6s to 9s 6d; plums, 4s 6'd to 9s 3d; nectarines, 12s to 14s; apricots, 8s to 18s 6d £-case; tomatoes, glasshouse red, ls to ls 7d; coloured, lld to ls 3d; outside red, 9d to ls ld; coloured, 6d to 9i-d |- case; grapes, 3s 6d to 4s per lb.; cherries, wanted. Vegetables: Beans, butter, 5d to 8d; runners, 5d to 9d; stringless, 7d to lld; beetroot, 4s to 9s; "lettuce, 6d to 5s; best, 14s to 17s; marrows, 2s to 5s; parsnipsT 24s to 34s; rhubarb, 3s to 8d; swedes, 10s to 12s to 16s 6d; silver beefc, 2s to 4s; spinach, 2s to 5s case; cabbage, 2s to 3s; cauliflowers, 12s to 16s 6d; pumpkins, 16s to 26s sack; cueumbers, 13s to 25s banaha case; peas, 6d to ls per lb.; sweet corn, 17s 6d to 20s bag; Chinese cabbage, 4d to 8d; mint, 3d to 4d; radish,-2d to 6d brnich.
