A Government audit inspector, Adam Souness Hamilton, who investigated the bus department revenue, said records were only available back to June 1946, earlier papers having been destroyed. He found hundreds of drivers' running sheets had been altered in amounts of £1 or £2 on each sheet. Part of accused's job was to check the daily running sheets and bank the cash. Investigations showed'that the misappropriation of cash from the running sheets had been covered up by resetting the xtotals on the bus cash registers to zero ' at frequent intervals and tlien running up a hew total.on the machine to correspond with ,the figure'- .appeavi'ng in the hook atfer the cash had been taken. Detective-Sergeant Waterson produced a statement by accused stating ,that to obtain money to provide for a sick wife, he^commenced ajtering the . .running sheets about two years ago.
