News Briefs From Borough Councils Meeting

The fortnightly meeting.. of the Shannon Borough Couricii was held on Tuesday evening, when the Mayor, Mr. D. A. Fitzgerald, presided over Crs. B. Clayton, 'W. J. Bateman, R. S. Downes, C. "M. Cronquest, 'L. G. Sayer, C. kCb Wishart and H. Aitchison. £n apology for absence was received from Cr. H. L. Norris. A letter was read from the "secretary of the Shannon branch of the Labour Party, pointing out that owing to unforeseen cirCumstances it woul'd not be possible to hold the street stall which the council had approved for January 28. The Horowheriua Electric Power Board wrote with reference to the council's request for an alteration in the position of the street light at the intersection of Margaret and Ballance Streets, advising that on three occasions he had written to the Main Highways Board for permission to shift the pole, but no reply had yet been received. He suggested that the council take the matter up with the highways board. On the motion of the Mayor, it was agreed that the town clerk communicate with the board. . " , ; On the motion of Cr. Clayton,' it was resolved that the town clerk write to the Valuer-General, askfcig that a special valuation * for rating purposes only be made of all dwellings erected since 1942. The registrar of dogs, Mr. E. G. Moss, attended the meeting when he was given instructions as to dog registration, according to the Dog Registration Act. The council agreed that the Act had to be strictly a'dhered to. The Mayor mentioned that rubbish was being collected from a residence which was stated to be outside the borough boundary. On the motion of Cr. Sayer, it was resolved to notify the resident that if in future he desired the collection of rubbish from his property, an annual fee of £1 ls would be charged. The Mayor. also stated that he had 'received a complaint. from a Nathan Terrace resident relatiye to .slush from the railway stock yardg. The matter was left...in the hahds of the works committee to bring down a report to the. council.. . Cr. Claytony bhairman jf the domains and cemetery committee, reported that the grass in the domain had been cut and the weeds sprayed at the cemetery.,- A further section of the cemetery paths had been cleaned and three loads of ashes placed on the new pathway. Cr. Clayton reported that the, domain mower needed • certain repairs and that his Cdhimittee , would be meeting to inspect the j trees growing in the coundil's beaiitifying plots near ..the " railway crossings. Cr. Batemary chairman of the , building committee, tabled plans and specifications for alterations to a building on the corner of Plimmer Terrace and Stout Street to include living premises, the value of 'the work being £455. He stated that everything was in order and, on his motion, the necessary permit was granted. Cr. Bateman also reported that a window in the domain dwelling had been repaired, and that a meeting of the industries committee had not been held because of the holidays. The chairman of -the works committee, Cr. Sayer, reported on works carried out, as mentioned in the borough foreman's report. A Public Works Department officer would be calling this week to discuss street sealing. Two loads of chips were on hand for this work. It was resolved that the works committee arrange to have footpaths mown where thought necessary. Cr. Bateman moved that the committee expedite the work authorised at the intersection of, Stout and Venn Streets. On the motion of Cr. Bateman, it was resolved that Mr. E. G. Moss be asked to make an inspection of the borough and notify residents who have hemlock growing on their property that it must be eradicated within three days, or they will be liable to prosecution. After the three days' notice had been given by Mr. Moss, a further inspection would be carried out. On the motion of Cr. Wishart, accounts amounting to £270 18s 10d were passed for payment. This amount included £91 12s 6d for wages and £76 17s 3d to the Palmerston Hospital Board as levies collected on rates by the council.
