Condemned Building Sold Under Hammer
An old building in Oxford Street, Levin, and three sections of land were sold by public auction yesterday. The building, which is opposite 'the Levin Primary School, is at present occupied by an elderly Maori woman. It had recently been condemned as a habitation iby the Health Department and a magisterial demolition order was issued to the owner. The sections and
building were sold yesterday to Mr. Hammond Murray, of Ohau, who bid £850. The sale price is still subject to a Land Saies Court approval. There were quite a number of spectators at the sale, which took place in Tpmlinson's Mart, but only two consistent bidders. The other interested party dropped out of the bidding- at £825. There are rio records in Levin as to the age of the house, but it is believed to exceed 50 years. Legend has it that a Maori child was buried on the property and that it was declared tapu (sacred). That belief is still eurrent among the Maoris today.
