'Reeeived Wednesday, 10.20 a.m. LONDON, Jan. 18. Wel'l-informed diplomatic quarters stated that the British Foreign •Secretary, Mr. Ernest Bevin, has informed the 'Chinese Ambassador in London, Dr. Cheng Tien-Msi, that Britain was unable to mediate .between 'the Chinese Government and Chinese Communists. It is understood that the Chinese request for mediation was addressed to Britain, France, the United States and Russia ten days ago an'd that Britain, after consulting with •France and the United States, believed that Great Power mediation would not be useful ih the present circumstances. The #unwillingness of the Soviet Government to mediate in the present critical stage of the Chinese war has led London observers to conclude that the Chinese Communists themselves are unlikely toi agree at this stage to a negotiated peace.
