Returned Servicemen Meet

The first meeting of the- Shannon branch of the Returned Services' Assoeiation for 1949 was held in Laurvig's Hall last week, when the president, Mr. B. Clayton, presided over an attendahce of 15 members. Also in attendance' was the president of the Tokomaru sub-branch. (Mr. T. R. Kelly) . „ The secretary, Mr. E. J. Gunning, reported that the roll membership stood at 252 members (Shannon 196 and Tokomaru 56). Of this , total 216 were flnancial members, while 147 of the total were returned personnel from World War II. On the motion of Lieut.Colonel J. H. Sharpe, it was resolved that the local branch forward an expression of sympathy to Mr. Henry Tahiwi, of the Tin Hat Club, in the recent passing of his brother, the late Mr. Kingi Tahiwi. A discussion followed the receipt of a circular from N.Z.R.S.A. in connection with. the amalgamaition of J-Force members. with the R.S.A., and it was ultimately tfecided to hold the matter over until the annual meeting, when there- would he a full. gathering of members to voice tlieir opinions. ! A further circular' suggested a 'conference of the various women's .sections. It was resolved that this matter be submitted to mem- ! bers of the women's section for 'their opinion and. suggestions, and that further action be left in | the hands of the R.S.A. executive. I With reference to the possible increase in subscriptions, this was -also left over to the annual meeting. \ I On the motion of Mr. R. S. Downes, a recommendation was made that the practice of holding quarterly meetings, with a social programme to follow, should be adopted and a date for this meeting set down. This was carried and the date fixed was Saturday, February 12, arrangements for the social portion of the meeting being in the hands of the ;entertainment committee. . ,
