Noel Parker First Winner Of Golden Helmet

The first cycling cohipfetitioil for. the Golden Helmet was decided at" the weekly sports held by the Levin Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club last eveningj and resuited in Noel Parker securing this fihe trophy. Owing ,to the two Otaki riders, D. Smith and. P. Roacne, being detained in Masterton, where they competed in the Wellingtb.n Centre championships on- Saturday, Parker was matched with H. .Watson, of Foxton. . > Ttie piublic attended in very large numbers, which resulted in the record. sum of £7 6s being contributed in the collection. That they were not disappbinted with the evening's entertainment was evidehc,ed by the frequent applause at the finishes of the Var-ious events, which were kept moving at a fast pace. The broad and high jump attracted a large entry and R. Desgrande was successful in winning both. The children's tricycle races^ also attracted very large fields and these youthful performers will b.e interested to learn that the boys of the Levin Training Centre have taken up a collection to provide a trophy for a race, and it will be included in the programme at the open meeting on February 5. Since the last meeting Mr. E. Lycette and the staff of the Levin Borough Council have improved ,the track • on the bend opposite the- baths,. • which had been the "scene of two mishaps this season. The turf bhas been lifted and tapered down to the edge of the cycle track, • with the result that if a rider now ran into it his machine would go • on to the grass. With the commencement of the first of the inter-club nights at Foxton on Thursday, no bus will go to Otaki on Wednesday eveningj but will leave instead for Foxton at 5.30 p.m. on Thursday, when a ..large number of competitors and shpporters will be making the trip.
