Smaller Fields At Evening Sports
Countep attractions, cooler conditions and a threatened change in the weather, doubtless accounted for the moderate attendance at t-he evening sports on the Otaki - Domain on Wednesday. COmpetitors also were fewer in number, the events for lady runneis being confined solely to Levin ■ entrants. Nevertheless, all events were keenly contested and some interesting entertainment was provided with many close finishes. When the field of eight in the senior two-mile cycle were all bunched in the home stretch. with two laps to go, L. Hughes eame down and M. Harper and S, Hughes followed in quick succession. Luckily the pace had moderated and the riders and their machiries emerged unscathed. . A medley half-miie relay proved a fitting' final. Roach and Meagher ran 440 yards, passing the batons to Gray and Mac'Leod, who in turn ran 220, and they were succeeded by Gordon and Mudge, who ran 110 yards. The final 110 saw exCitement running high as Misses Tyree and Cameron raced for the tape lodked together, the judges being - unable to separate them, and - announcing a dead heat.
