Why Do People Go To Church?
Received- Thufsdav, 7.15 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 13. Church-going is only a social habit, says Mass Observation, an organisa-_ lion making soeial surveys in Britain. "The feeling that the actual praclice of religion must be expressed in church-going, no longer appears essenlial, " it says in a report published today. "Even a professed belief in God does not, in general, lead to churchgoing — unless the habit is formed early in life. . "Regular attendance is inevitably a habit," the report^ continnes. "The church becomes social and to go to church becomes. a social habit." But ministers questioned . during the survey disagree. One said: "Twenty years ago a large proportion tf churchgoing was conventional but today most people go for defmite worship. " '
