Radar System For Port Of Auckland
» AUCKLAND, Jan. 13, A port radar system, the first of its kind in New Zealand, has been instalied by the Auckland Harbour Board at Mt. Vietoria signal station and will be in general operation as soon as signalmen have been trained to work it. Its main use will be to plot ships entering port at distances up to 25 miles, in order to prevent. delay in providing a pilot for them. . It is expected to be most valuable on days such as today when niurky weather limited visibility to less than 10 miles. The equipment used is on loan from the Department of Scxentifie and Industrial Researeh and the installation work was done by an Auckland firm. For the next year the system will be regularly used in order to obtain data to find out whether a radar system is necessary and if so what type would be most suitable. The present set is an American one which shows the harbour and gulf area as a plan with land and ships appearing as "blips" of light on the sereen,
