Fire Brigade Concerned At Low Water Pressure
The very low pressure of water obtainable from the mains during the summer months is a matter that causes the Otaki Volunteer
mre isrigaae concern eacn year. The seasonar influx of visitors and holiday-makers, and the countless number of garden hoses, sprinklers and, lately, : sprinkler systems, that are called into use at this time of t'he year have aggravated the already acut'e position at Tasman Beach and Rangiuru, and the matter came under review at the monthly meeting of the bri-e-^de nri Mnndav niffht.
It was decided to seek the assistance of Fire Board members on the Otaki Borough Couneil, in the hope that steps will be taken to more rigidly enforce the regulations governing the restriction of the use of hoses and sprinklers during the Maytime. The many frequent applications to the council for an extraordinary water supply were referre'd to also, and stress was laid on the /act that several users were out of the borough. It was felt that a halt should be called, as it was considered that this was a prime factor in the supply to the thickly populated areas being so poor. It will be recalled that several dwellings were threatencd at Rangiuru last summer and had the brigade not been able to draft water from - the nearby stream (there was barely "garden hose" pressure available from the mains) , a major fire would have been witnessed. Should a similar outbreak occur elsewhere the same emergency mea^ures eoul'd not be i adopted, and the brigade feels that users should comply with*the restrictions in their own interests.
