WHANGAREI, Jain. 11. There was recently unearthed, at the Purua lime works in the vicinity of Whangarei, a tooth 21 inches long, \ 1| inches in width and of a thickness varying to five-eighths of an inch. Almost black in colour with a shiny surface, its edges were serrated. Dispatched to the Geological Sur- 6 vey Office, Wellington, the ActingDirector has now identified it as a tooth belonging to an extinct species of shark whieh lived about 50,000,000 years ago. A simila^tooth was found in greensand at pahi, in the Kaipara distriet, some time ago. &
