Captain F. A. Barrett, skipper of the New Zealand share-freighter Viti, makes his own bed; and waits his turn for service at meals, according to the Sydney Sunday Sun in a^recent article about "the ship. All the crew eat together, and * the steward who waits on them is part-owner of the ship. Ifourteen members of the crew have equal shares in the ship, two remaining shares being held by. the agent, solicitor, and accountant. Formerly the Fijian Governor's luxury yacht, the Viti is run .on orthodox lines ' an'd discipline is observed. Captain Barrett and most of the crdw were shinmates in the Merchant Navy during the war. When they left the Merchant Navy the crew banded together and, aided by the N.Z. Government's Rehabilitation Scheme, bought the Wakakura. N.Z. and N.S.W. waterside workers federations gave them a sixmonths permit to work their own cargo, and Captain Barrett took his share of the work. The Viti brings fish from N.Z. to Sydney in her refrigerated cargo space and takes back citrus fruit and egg pulp.
