Call For Anglo-American Unity
[ . PERTH, Jan. 6. 1 A call for unity among Britisli peoples and for the encouragement oi An glo-American accord, was made today by the Leader of the 1* ederal Opposition, Air. Menzies, who arriveu at Fremantle in the liner Orcades. Air.
Alenzies had been awav six months an.i visited Britain, the Gontinent aud tlie United Btates'."The international position is very precarious," said Mr. Alenzies. "There is 110 doubt that Russia is regarded throughout the world as constituting a real threat to peace. I don't fneau that 1 think Russia is conteniplating at, immediate attack but she is getting by aggression everything that she caa,
short of actual vvarfare. It is exemplified in Berlin but I am sure it is not generally. reaiised just what is happeuing there. There is a feeling that if the air lit't maintains its present success , through the spring, the Kussians wiil lift he blockatle of Berlin. That may or may n.pt b'e'so but »two" things hav.v to be done:-^ - - "Firstly, the Western Powers niust make it clear to the Boviet Union that lio further aggression will be loierateri. "Secondly, in the long run we must not accept a European settlement which does not give the European Powers treedoin and self -government. That meuns, in ihe long run, that tlie Boviet Union will have to get: out of 11011Russian Europe." The preseut propaganda of che Russians was to say " Let us all get out ( of Germany. " But that was too simple. It meaus that the Russian arruies would be moved 100 miles east of Berlin while the American armies would. go back 10 the United Btates. The general feeling In England was now that complete fir'mness in relation to Russia was essential. Certainly that was the accepted viewpoint 111 the United States. I don't think the debates of United Nations are of any use for a European settlement. United Nations Assembiy is a'bit apt to forget that it has 110thing to do wih a European peace settlement. Dr. Evatt has always made it clear that it is°one for the belligerent, powers and of course, he is quite right, People who won the war by their own saerifices are the people entitled to say what the settlement should be and dis cussions in United Nations are there fore gloriouslv irrelevant."
