Unimproved Rating Poll Following receipt of a petition from the ratepayers of Shannon, the Mayor (Mr. D. A. Fitzgerald) had agreed that a poll be taken to ascertain whether the Shannon Borough Council shall adopt the unimproved method of rating. The poll will . be conducted in the Council Chambers, Plimmer Terrace, on Saturday, February 12. An official announcement in this issue draws the attention of all ratepayers to the proposed poll. Thanks to the Workers The citizens of Shannon and district owe their thanks to those people whose duties have compelled them, in the interests of the public, to work over the Christmas and New Year holidays. They are the farmers, certain public servants who have made*the telephone and railway services possible, the bus and taxi drivers, and the picture theatre staffs. All these have combined to make our holidays more pleasant and our citizens join in wishing them a very happy holiday when their turn comes around. -
Manawatu River Rises Evidence* that some heavy rain has been experienced in the upper region of the Manawatu River can be obtained from the fact that the 'river rose a taw feet yesterday and the water is very dirty. This is unfortunate as the river has been popular with bathers over the recent hot weather. The condition of the river is now most unsuitable for swimming. v Holiday Rush Over Shannon has quietened down after the holiday rush and is now back to normal routine. The town was fairly busy yesterday, when the shops opened for business, and the butcher, bakers and grocers were kept working steadily- Most of the visitors to Shannon have now returned to their homes and it is expected that local residents who hav# bean holidaying will drift back to town within the next week or so.
