■ WELLINGTON, Jan. 6. A total of 195 people loSt their lives in traffic accidents during 1948, said the Minister of Transpor.t, Mr,. Hackett, today. December, 1948, with 21 kilied, was the worst December for traffic deaths since 1940, he said. "I have no doubt that these fatalities were due to the greatly increased volume of traffic carried by the roads throughout the country over the holidays," said Mr. Hackett. "I have received reports from traffic- officers all over New Zealand and while all comment on the generally high standard of driving and ' cyclmg, too many instances are quotecl of careless, reckless or inconsidefate driving. "Two hundred and six were killed in 1947 and, bearing in mind the greatly Increased number of vehicles on the roads last year, the results for 1948 show that reul progress has been made in reducing uiaiiic deaths. This is good, but not ieaixy good enough."
