No Jews Are Now On Egyptian Soil

Received Wednesdav, 7.30 p.m. WASHINGTON, Jan. 4. The State Department said today Ihat the Israeli Government had give7i .assurancee to the United States that all Israeli forces had been recalled from Egypt and none were now on Egyptian soil. These assuranees were given after the United States made representat'ions in Tel Aviv "drawing attention" to the fact that Britain and Egypt were linked by a niutual defenee pact. A State Department spokesman said America took this aetiojr after the British Ambassador, Sir Oliver Franks, told the Acting Secretary of S.tate, AIj. Robert Lovett, that if Israeli forces did not withdraw from Egyptian territory, the British Government would have to eonsider its position under the 193(5 treaty alliance. The spokesman said the United States Embassy in Cairo had been instructed to warn the Egyptian Government that sucli incidents as the recent gerial and naval attacks in PaJestine "can only result in furtlmr extending liostilities. " The spokesman added: "The United States representation in Tel Aviv, made in a most friendly spirit, has resulted in assuranees by the Provisional Government. of Israeli that Israeli forces entered

Egyptian territory solely in the course of military operations and not with the intention of occupying Egyptian territory. The Provisional Government further stated that all such forces liad been recalled from Egypt and that no Israeli troops now remain on Egyptian soil." The spokesman said reports that United States had threatened to withdraw recognition or consideration o'f a 100,000,000 dollar loan to Israeli were completely untrue. Ife said: "These" instructions to Tel Aviv and Cairo wero sent in view of the great interest the United States has in the peace ariil security of the Middle East and in view of the eoncern of the United States at any action by either the Israeli or Arabs eontaining a threat of an enlargement of the confliet. The State Department trusts that the parties in the Palestine confliet will now undertake to eomply with the resolutions of the Security Council calling for a cease-fire, cessation of liostilities and prompt negotiations of a permanent armistiee.
