A New Zealander and an Australian who', according to the United Sjtates immigrat'ion authoritie.s, were ringieaflers i in an unsuecessful mass escape attempt from the Immigration Department detenGion quarters liere will be deported at the earliest opportunity, officials said today. They are: Robert J. McGowan, aged- 27, of New Zealand, and James G. Jessup, aged 21, of Sydney. Men of fifteen nationalities were involved in the attempted escape. McGowan and Jessup, together with accomplices, planned the oreak meticiilously, according, to the immigration authorities, and made a ,rope of bed sheets to enable them to swing from the decention quarters on the twelfth hoor across to an adjoining building. The escape attempt was foiled by an officer during a routine inspection and the decainees were nnmediately transferred to Ala-
mede County gaol for safer keepmg. The Australian Consulate said that Jessup entered America iliegally aboard the Monterey in 19-i6 and since then had worked in various parts of the States. The Consulate had no record of McGowan, vvho earlier had allegedly been josted as an Australian.
