Big Housing Scheme For Canberra
AUCKLAND, Jan. 5. One o^'.the ^biggest ; housing eonstauU* tion jobs in the Southern IJemispherc is about to begin in Canberra. Mr. James Perry, a Canberra building eontractor, who is on holiday in New Zealand, said today that the Pederal (tovernment rec/ently let a contraet to a Melbourne lirm for 1850 houses. Mr. Perry„added that Australia, like New Zealand, had a State housing scheme. The main differenee was the Australian houses were of brick. The Canberra housing scheme was part of the Government plan to raise the population of the eapital city from the presen.t 15,000 to about 50,006* within 10 years. Two wars and the depression had retarded Canberra ;s progress when the city was ready for expansion. Mr. Perry applauded the Chifiey Government 's action in pushing ahead with the Canberra scheme.
