Personal Mrs. M. Bowden, of Karori, has been visiting Otaki as the guest of Mrs. R: Kearns. Mrs. Ci Garrett, of Iti Steet, has returned home after a fairly lengthy spell in hospital. Miss M. Baron and Mr. W. White, of Lower Hutt, spent the weekend in Otaki, the guests of Mrs. H. Jepson. Mr. and Mrs. B. Knox, of Wellington, former residents, were renewing acquaintances in Otaki over the weekend. Canon N. F. E. Robertshawe and his family, of Wellington, are in residence at the vicarage, Otaki,' for the next three weeks, the vicar, Canon H. E. K. Fry, having arranged an exchange of duties> in St. Mark's Parish during this period. % Good Fishing Quite heavy catches of fish have been made locally over the holidays, schnapper, kahawai and flatties having appeared in satisfy■ing numbers. • Sideshows Move With the return to normal duties today-,- the attendances of visitors is likely to be affected and the many carnival sideshows are now located in Main Street, near the iire station. Dances Well Attended Young folk had the choice of three dances on Friday night, the Te Horo Younger Set drawing a full house at Te Horo, while dances at the Beach Hall ahd Raukawa Hall .also attracted satisfactory attendances. Carnival Functions Two functions organised by the Citizens' Queen Committee, a dance at the Beach Hall on Thursday night and a card evening on Tuesday, drew good attendances. Mrs. H. Tews -and Messrs. Tews and N. Walker supplied first class music -for the dance, and Mr. L. Staples made a capable M.C. Winners at: the card evening were Mrs. Hough,-' ton and Mrr P. Hobson. Splendid Holiday Weather Apart- froih a few isolated showers early on New- Year's Eve, the weather continued beautifully fine in Otaki throughout the hoiidays, and hosts of visitors were attracted to the beaches. A very welcome fall of rain oconrred late on Tuesday and continued throughoutrthe night, at times being very heavy indeed. As a resuit the district has benefited,. considerably. Quiet New .Year's Eve New Year's Eve was ushered in with due pomp and ceremony in Otaki, the numerous musical parties not being deterred by the few showers that fell early injhe evening. The strpets quickly cleared foliowed the closing of shops and a lull occurred, but there was the usual variety of noises at midnight. The local police report having an agreeably quiet time, with but one "job" to do.
