The hero of the ganie was the 20-year-old Hutt Valley colt J. lleid. Wellington required 156 runs in 305 minutes. Eeid rau up 8S not out of 159 runs scored in 88 minutes. Eeid's vvas a magnilicent innings and incluJed four glorious sixes. When he made the winning hit the big erowd which had elieered every stroke, gave him a tremendous ovation. The takings for the two home shield games aggregated £1699 which sets a record for shield games in Wellington. Eeid already appeared a certainty for the tour of England. His innings todav placed him &mong the most eompetent stroke makers produced in tliis country and should heighten the general interest in the performance of the team on its tour. A feature of his batting is the tremendous power he can impart" to his shots. With an apparent minimum of eft'ort, he stroked' his drives, pulls, glides and cuts to the boundary with such artistry that the erowd. was kept in constant expectation of something really great and received it in abundance. Eeid was most ably ' assisted by a competent eii'ort by G. Eabone while D. S. Wilson shared in the final applause for deelining to ghther some easy runa as an outriglit victory loomed in sight, to enable Eeid to make the winning hit. The weather was bright and sunny when play was resume'd. but a heavy overnight rain had left the outiield sofL und the wicket was damp in plaees. Seores: — CANTEEBUR17.
