Fire Victim Succumbs A man who was severely burned in an apartment house fire in Lichfield Street on December 22, died at Burwood Hospital on Sunday- He was Mr. Arthur Gorham, aged 62, married. Car Driver Chapged i Charged with being intoxicated while driving a car in Mill Road, Otaki, on New Year's Eve, Erie Souter, of Levin, appeared before Messrs. W. A. Calwell and W. McBeth, J.P.'s, at Otaki on Saturday. He was fined £10 and had his li'cence cancelled for 12 months. Borer Beetles The Wellington laboratory which sought borer beetles for research work did not reckon on the response its appeal would bring. The results have been embarrassipg. The laboratory has within a few weeks changed its attitude from 'one of inviting citizens to forward beetles to it to that of asking that no more be sent. Goid Discovery Claim Two young deerstalkers claim to have discovered a new gold-bearing reef about 30 miles east of Reefton, says the Nelson Evening Post. It is claimed that a sample taken from a quartz reef, about three feet wide, produced over 5oz. of gold. An area of 600 acres has been pegged off. No previous discoveries of gold in this area have been reported. Picnic Tragedy The drowning of a 13-year-old boy, Fred Ian Graham, came as a tragic end to a family picnic party on the banks of the Taieri River, owo miles below Allanton. His mother, Mrs. I. Graham, of Green Island, and her small boy and girl, were resting on the riverbank while Fred paddled in the river. The boy valked into deep water and the mother, a non-swimmer; was powerless to rescue her son. The body was recovered. Car Crashes Into Post Three people were injured, two being admitted to hospital, when a car containing two married couples crashed into a concrete post north of Porirua about 6 o'clock last night. The two seriously injured were women, Mrs. Ivy Rennie, of 35 Thompson Street, Wellington, received head injuries, a fractured jaw, lacerations, abrasions and shock. Her condition in Wellington Hospital last night was stated to be" satisfactory. Mrs. Henrietta Carr, of the same address, suffered head injuries and shock. Her condition was also satisfactory. Mr. Rennie, who suffered lacerations to his forehead, was treated and discharged. Motqr-eyclist Killed ' ' ' The rider of a motor-cycle was killed in a head-on collision with a motor-car near Dunsandel on Sunday evening. He was William Boyd, of Fairfield. The accident occurred about a mile north of the Bankside railway station. Mr. Boyd had a passenger, Gordon Meredith, of Dromore, on the pillion of his motor-cycle. The c'ar with which the motor-cycle collided was driven by Mr. Ernest Drake, of 274 High Street, Dunedin. Mr. Boyd and Mr. Meredith were tdkCn to the Christchurch Public Hospital and the. former was found on arrival to be dead. Mr. Meredith was also injured, but was reported later to be in a satisfactory condition.
