, — - £600 For Hospitals Over £600 was collected during the recent Manawatu, Wanganui and Horowhenua street day appeals for funds for hospitals1 Christmas cheer. ' In announcing this yesterday the chairman of the Palmerston North Hospitai Board (Mr. J. A. Nash) said that a cheque for £3 was handed to a street coilector as'-'a donation but was unsigned. World*s Oldest Eel Dead The world's oldest fresh-water eel, born in 1861 and kept in a tank in the museum at Helsingborg, in South Sweden, since 1863, died recently. Known to visitors as Puttie, this veteran was only 18in. long, with unusually large eyes. Puttie was very sociable, and it is said! that he cavorted delightedly, like a playful kitten, when stroked on the neck. ; Abattoir Killings . The following report of the stock kiljed at the Levin •\abattoirs during No vehiber iwa's ' ' last nigh't isubmitted to the Leyin Borough Council by the mahager, Mr. F. E. Larsen, the figure^" for the same period last year being shown in parentheses:— Cattle,' 650 (618); "calves, 9 (6) ; sheep and lambs, 4888 (4958); pigs, 798 (404). Three battle, eight sheep and seven pigs were condemned. The fees for the frnonth were £1106 12s 2d as against £988 3s lOd in November iast year. Municipal Library ; The installation of fluorescent lighting had resulted in an improvement at the library 'reported 'the librarian, Mrs. M. Whitaker, to the Levin Borough Council's meeting last night. The hook cases were now being removed to positions -allowing more light, and the . largest case was being eut down hnd a new book case provided to take the place of the shelves removed. The following are the figures for books issued, those for the same period last year being ishown in parentheses:— National Library: Fiction, -157, non-fiction, '151; total, 308 (421). Christmas Party Pupils of the Jean Scott School of Dancing held a Christmas party in the Oddfellows' Hall on Saturday last to mafk the close of the year. Competitions were held; the winners being Vivienne Boyce and Audrey Cameron, while Miss Dale Williams was presented with a box of chocolates won for a competition during the recent recital. Fergus Carrington then ehtertained with a Punch and Judy show, following which afternoon tea was partaken of from gaily decorated tables. At the conclusion of the afternoon the pupils thanked Miss Scott and extended to her the compliments of the season. )Polio Patients Rfespond Although the present epidemic had brought some badly paralysed patients in its .train the general improvement of poliomyelitis patients during the epidemic had been remarkable, said the medi'cal superintendent to "the Palmerston North Hospitai Board (Mr.- J. H. North) at yesterday's meeting of the board. The resufts of the present methods of trbatment had been far better than in previous epidemics. The hospitai had been combining with Rotorua Hospitai authorities and beds had been set aside in Rotorua at the exsetvicemen's ' hostbl for the final treatment of patients.
