Watersiders Object To Police Search
AUCKLAND, Dee. 14/ Requesting tlie provision. of'chan^erooiii facilities at all wharf sheds, tlie Auckland AYaterside Workers' Union today informed the Auckland Harbour Board tliat 'it woald consider further action if no results liad been aehieved by February. At a stopwork meeting of the union it was stated' tliat detectives liad searched, clothing left by waterside workers in the steamer Waipiata during the evening meal ureak oi\~ November 18. "We respeet the fact tliat the police iuust, of necessity, liave fairly wide powers," stated the union, " bul we also say that the ordinary citizen has certain fundamental rights. For the police to search men 's clothing in the absence of any union representation, is a gross iniringeuient of tliose riglits. ' ' The provision of a. rooui in whicli the inen could change and ieave tlieir clothes uuder proper supervision. and control, was a niatter of urgeucv. The request \\;as referretl" to the board in comniittee.
