Tokomaru Protection Work Continues

— — — "Protection work on the. Tokomaru Kiver lias been going aliead," reported P. V. Tueker, tlie overseer, at yesterday 's nieetilig oi the Makerua Drainage Board. "I have interviewed Mr. McNeill and have his permission to rentove about one dozen cabbage t'rees without charge. Mr. Wliite also has sonie pine trees that can be topped and used for the protection work. A tractor working at present near Ashlea* Road will be available in about a week's time, so T hope to have this work completed before Christmas. " Mr Tueker also reported that during the month botli Mabin's and Smith 's drains were cleaned. Wall's drain was cleaned and reconditioned. Aker's drain north of the intersecting channel had been cleaned to .Mr. OTIagan's property and was being continued throughout. Serious damage l>v cattle continued to be done to this drain. particularly from Wil-son's'-Koad to near thc Rangitane Road bridge, and from the Ashlea Road corner to. Doherty's drain. Trees planted near the board 's drains some years ago liad no w eneroaehed into the drains and it would be impossible. to maintain the drains unless the trees were cut back. It was decided to take steps to earry • out an experiment on the ^willows on the Makerua drain on the MakeruaRangitane Road subject to the permission of the Horowhenua County Council. The board hoped to use a weed killing liormone. It would be injected into a thin ring ronnd the bark of the tree. ' The Horowhenua County Council advised that the Okuku bridge over the .Tokomaru Kiver cpuld not be str§ngthened at the present because of the e^teusive work involved. A maximum loading limit of 6 tons would be imposed. Those present at the meeting were Mr. S. H. Claridge and Trustees W. McWilliams, A. E. Olsen, J. D. Aitchison and A. Gillespie.
