Shop Days To Be Fewer?
; There seems a distinct possibility that permission to hold shop sdays in Otaki will not be granted. Vithout restrict.on from now on. An earlier meeting of the Otaki Borough Council decided tnat. the 4natter of allotting so many days per year for shop days would be reconsidered early in the New Year. S milar views were expressed at Wednesday's meeting of the council, when diScussion followed an application by Mrs. I. Ci-oss, for the Textiles' Queen Commit ee, who asked the council for permiss.on to hold a shop day on January 14. Councillors were divided in their opinions as to whether tne app ication should be granted or deciined. The Mayor, Mr. C. F. Atmore, staled that the pos.tion should be watched, and asked what- would be the position if . five appiications were" received,- one from each queen committee. He considered that. shopkeepers should. be' given consideration Cr. G. McKinley agreed, adding that when approached on the matter he liad reccmmended that bazaars, off the Main -Street, wou d be "easier on- the shopkeepers." Some committees had arranged bazaars. Cr. E. J. Cook stated that on this occasion the committees under discussion were helping Otaki and, therefore, he thought they were not "treading on anyone's toes. We have the power to grant the application or otnerwise, and we should say yes or no," he added. Cr. H. W. Hakaraia supported this vievh He considered. there would not t.e five appLcations. "Most of the councillors are" he ping .on some committee or other," he added. The application was granted, there being one dissenting voice.
