Two Little Princesses Find Life Is Not Bed Of Roses
Tw.o stories about Queen Juliana's" elder daughters, Princesses 'Be&trix (jLQ) and Irene (9), are told in the Netherlands newspaper Helderse Courant. I The first is that ijust before Princess Juliana became Queen s-he receiyed a -tei&phone :call from a police inspector telling her that the Princesses, with some schoolgirl friends, ;had b'een caught taking grapes from a greengrocer's cart.
"What is t'he usual -_proce'dure in such cases?" asked Queen j Juliana. j The inspector said: "We keep youngsters caught red handed like this in custody for a couple of"' hours." Queen Juliana !saM: "Stick to • your procedure with the friencls, ibut Beatrix and Irene you must ikeep in for three' hours." i ""'The second story is that after :her mother's investiture, Princess Beatrix, heireSs presumptive to ,fche -throne, refused to do any 'schoolroom cleaning — a task done Iby -all the pupils at her school. j The school teacher was told ;that Princess Beatrix should be punished by having to walk home six miles from the school. | -Her parents relented and Prince Bernhard set out in a car to meet his daughter halfway. I He did not find her .until he ha'd '■returned to the Palace, where he was greeted by Princess Beatrix ,with "I got a lift." j Her father drove her back to t'he ' school and said, "You walk home. I am going to. follow you."
