Success Claims By Chinese Nationalists

(N.Z.P.A.-

-Reuter.

Covvright)

Received Monday, 9.45 a.m. NANKING, Dec. 5. • Nationalist headquarters today claimed fufther suc'Cesses on the Central and North China fronts, which neutral observers, however, treated with caution. Aecording to Government dispatches, the Nationalists have reoccupied the railway town of Kucheng, 20 miles north of Pengpu. The dispatches* claimed that the Communists withdrew north-west-^ wards, threatening to develop into a rout. Observers, however, believe that th§ Communists may be regrouping for new thrusts southward on either side of Pengpu. The Communsts' strength above Pengpu hitherto has" been insufficient to force a path directly southward throdgh the Nationalist defences. Aecording to Natibnalist headquarters, Government forces have wrested the initiative from the Communists in the battle for Kalgan, the provincial capital of Chahar. The battle is described as' turning rapidly into "pursuit" of the attacking Communists. The Communist radio claimed the capture of the towns of Hwoiying and Hweian, 110 and. 90 miles north of Nanking respectively, in North Kiangsu. Hweian is the principal Nationalist base in North Kiangsu.
