Many Parents See Work Of College

An exceptionally large number of parents gathered at the Horo- • whenua College yesterdav afternoon -when parents' day was obServed. , The visitors first viewed the college cadets being put through Iheir drill on the tennis courts, after which they adjourned to the , assembly hall. Welcoming the visitors, the principal, Mr. N. A. Byrne. expresSed surprise and appreciation at such a large, attendance.

The recently-formed college orchestra then entertained with ,a series of numbers. after' the singing teacher, Miss A. Browning, led the assembled children in a group' of Chriotmas carols. An item which met with considerable applause was a male quintette's rendition of "We Three. Kings Of Orient Are." The quintette comprised Russell Swan. Brian Morrison, G. Lankshear/ Stewart Fox and David Lind, solo parts being taken by Brian Morrison, Stewart .Fox and David Lind. Further ! numbers by the school followed, a jf eature of which was a number jfrom the "Pirates of Penzance." The college was then thrown jopen for inspection, the work of j the pupils being displayed in tlie various class rooms. Of special in''terest to the visitors was the fiat xun entirely by the home science girls under instruction by Miss Coleman. An exact replica of a modern home, the girls have turns in keeping house, two being on duty for a week. They are required to do all the housework and cookfor six persons, and are per - mitted to invite their friehds there. The daily work also includes shopping excursions, the girls, however, being required to keep within a given budget. • . •

Another outstanding feature of the displays was in the woodwork room, where the senior boys, under Mr. E. Lacey, have produced some excellent models and furniture of a high standard. Visitors also found much to admire in the dressmaking an arts section. Some excellent poster, cartoon and art work by Michael Walker and Wing Young was particularly admired. In the-library was displayed some excellent examples of floral work by the girls. During the afternoon, tea was served on the quadrangle.
