New Briefs From Borough Council's Meeting
The fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening, when the- Mayor (Mr. D. A. Fitzgerald) -presided over Crs. B. ' Clayton, V. J. Bateman, H. L. Norris,, R. S. Downes, C. M. - Cronquest, L. G., Sayer and H; Aitchison. An apology for absence was received from CrrC. G. " The town clerk also reported that he had ordere'd the ' dog eollars for the next year. The borough foreman's report was read and received. A Margaret Street reslderi't made ' applieation for attention to the . footpath. in front of her residence and also asked for the graSs to be cut. It was agreed that the customary yard. of metal be granted. and that the chairman of the works committee arrange for the grass to be cut.
Cr. Clayton reported that the trees in Ballance Street. had been topped and., the domaiii conveniences c'eaned out. He also reported that the Horowhenua Softfcall Associatioii had the use of the domain and there"appeared to be ample room for both • • cricket and softball teams to use the domain at the one time. Arrangements had been .made for the cutting of the grass in the beauti'fying area. The cemetary grounds we°re. being put in order and he suggested that a man be employed for this work ior one week. This was agreed to by the council and arrangements were left in Cr. Clayton's hands. The chairman of the building 'committee, Cr. Bateman, reported on a cireular letter received from the building Controller relative to amendments to the building control policy. This matter was letft in the hands of the building committee. Applications for a fowlhouse by a Ballance Street resident and aHerations to a dwelling in Vance Street • -were received. The former was granted and the latter if it was considered to be ill- orde'r3 by the building . committee. Bateman was directed to obtai'n a quote for the work. from a- loeal tradesmanv Cr. Sayer drew Cr. Bateman's attention to repairs required to the ■pdund , shed. Cr. Bateman stated' that he had carfie out an inspecion with the borough foreman and the work
would be done as time permitted. ■ Cr. Sayer, chairman; of the works committee, stated. that. ihe engineer 'employed to v review the borough water* supply scheme !was well on with the work/ and was going to Wellington, -to' confer with the- enginedr of 'the:. ' Public Works Department,: ' after Whieh he would f urnlsh a draft and eubmit tbie scheme to the council. Gr . Sayer also reported that to date no quote had .been received for the erectidh of a dividing- fence in the Nathan -Terrace property. A commencement has^ been made on mowing the borough . streets and an extra horse had' been hired for the work. Hev said that he had been in communication with the engineer- of the Horowhenua County Council to ascertain how the reconstruction being carried out ' on No.' 552 maln highway (Grey Street) compared with the estimates, and in this informatiOn would be to harid. at a later date. The town clerk reported that the Mayoress (Mrs.. D. A. Fitzgerald) had intimated that- * she was willing to act on the library committee. Mrs. H. .Tremewan, in a. letter, said she also had much pleasure in being- associated with the library committee. Mrs. J. T. Bovis, while : congratulatihg, . the pouncil on the . dmprovem&nts to the - library and expressing .thanks for offering her the opportunity to work witli the committee, stated that owing- to several other - interests she regretfully fojund it imrpqssible to accept the offer.. Cr, Norris, chairman cf the library committee, . reported . that the library was making good progress, and outlined the financial position. All the old discarded books which had not been so'd had now been destroyed. and 100 additlonal books from the National Library Service and several new books, mostly fiction, were on the library shelves. Accounts amountingto £1917s5d were ipassed for payment on the motion of Cr. Cronquest.
