On The Croquet Lawns
Last week saw the Levin Croquet Club suffer its first loss in interclub matches, when its team was beaten at Palmerston North by the Groua club, 95 — 75. . Individual scores were as follows, Oroua players being mentioned first in each case: — Singles: Mrs. Price lost to Mrs. Gilmore 23 — 26, Mrs. McKeown beat Mrs. Dalzell 26 — 4. Doubles: Mesdames Knight and Manning beat Mesdames Fraser and Bull 26 — 19, Mesdames Bridge and Pither lost to Mesdames Mason and Holdaway 20—26. . On Tuesday Levin teams journeyed to Paekakariki to play the second round of the Council Cup. Hcavy rain throughout the morning made play impossible, and the match was abandoned. The Brown ^utton match played a tjte local green t|iis week resulted in Mesdameq|j|jitogway and Weston beating 'flKmes Find- , later and Noble 26"^Hr The highlight of nast" week was the vis'it of Mr. Wthur Ross, New Zealand referee and examiner. Mr. Ross is visiting the various clubs, giving tuition and showing members just how croquet should be played. Members from the Otaki and Foxton clubs came to Levin on Saturday to join in a field day. At the afternoon tea adjournment the president, Mrs. W. Bull, said how honoured the club was in having such a distinguished player as Mr. Ross at its lawns. Mrs. A. Wilson (Otaki) and Mrs. Edwards (Foxton) also voiced their clubs' appreciation and thanked the Levin club for making the visit possible. All players were of the opinion that the visit of Mr. Ross will be an added stimulus to. croquet in the district.
