No Rush To Build Garages Expected
Discrediting the current belief that there would be a rush to. secure permits for the building or 'garages as the result of a Ministerial announcement, which takes : effect today, in regard to building •materials, the' town clerk, Mr. H. ;'L. Jenkins, said this morning that !the position in regard to garages ;was not greatly altered as a result ,'of the easing of restrictions on the juse of certain building materials. The old restrictiops still applied ifundamentally, he said with the ■exception that-- applications for ['permits for the building of garages |Were dealt with and issued from ,the Borough Council office, instead jof first being referred to the conjtroller in Palmerston North. The i'element of delay was, therefore, ■minimised. Garages can still only be built of second-hand timber or timber •unsuitable for house construction. Concrete or reinforcing steel canmot be used. !r The maximum overall size must not be more than 200 square feet. Bituminous fabric is the only roofing material allowed. 1 If the work is undertaken by a tradesman it must be done outside the normal 40-hour week. An owner can, however, build at any thne.
