WELLINGTON, Nov. 0V •Casualties in the New Zealand Armed Sxnwices and MeTcantjle Marine from September 3, 1939 to December 31, 1946, totailed 3.6,038 according to a statement of the strengths and losses in these . services in. .the 1939-45 war, wljieh whs tabled in the Ilouse of Kep^esentatives today * by the Minister -of Defence, Mr. Jones. The strength of the New Zealand Navy, Army and Air Porceii reached its highest point in July 1942, when the total strength was: 154,549. (these figures do not include the New -Zealand Patrol Ser- ; vice and Iiome Guard). • • - Tables in the statement gave.a statistical survey of'the strengths and casualties of the Royal New Zealand Navy, New Zealand Army, Royal New Zealand Air Force and -New Zealand Mercantile Marine in "World War TI. The" statement, which also gave the losses of ships, ' losses of airtcraft (where known) and honours and awards, was compilcd by the war history Franch of the Department of Internal Affairs from details supplied by the N0avy, Army, Air and Marine Departmepts. Details of the casualties in New Zealand Armed Services and Mereantile Marine are as follow : — Na^'y: Deaths (including di.ed as pi'isoner of war) 573, wounded and injured 170, prisoners of war "54, interned 3, total 800. Army: Deaths (including died as prisoner of war) 6793, wounded and injured 15,324, prisoners of war 6644, wounded and taken prisoner of war 1219, missing 46, total 30,026. Air Force: Deaths (including died as prisoner of war) 4149, wounded and injured 255, . prisoners' of war 520, wounded a.nd taken prisoner of war 32, interned 23, tota) 4979. Mercantile Marine : Deaths (including died as prisoner of war) 110, interned 123, total 233. Orand total : Deaths (including died as prisoner of war) 1 1 ,625,.wounded and injured 15,749, prisoners oh war 7218, wonnded and taken prisoner of war 1251, interned 149, ^missing 46, total 36,038. Tn addition, 11 deaths occurred in the 2nd N.Z.E.F. (Japan).
