LUCKY FARMHAND AND HIS WIFE

(Special to "Chronicle") SHANNON, Nov. 10. Lucky indeed are a Makerua couple for they are the winners of the first' prize of £2000 in the "Here's Luck" art union. They are Mr. and Mrs. Roger Foote, who hold the ticket jointly. Employed as a farmhand by his father-in-law, Mr. R. Swinbum, Mr. Foote heard of their good forlune over the radio thi^ morning, only catching the nom-de-plume, "Digger's Rest," and not the ticket number. When a representative of "The Chronicle" called on them at 2 p.m. today and told them the good news, Mrs. Foote was overjoyed, but her i husband did not show any great reaction. Ke admitted the money j .vould be handy. Regular buyers of tickets for many years, this is the first time dny prize has been won by either of them. The nom-de-plume, "Digj r er's Rest," was decided upon when Mr. Foote was resting after doing j some particularly strenuous digging in the vegetable garden. When our correspondent left, Mr. Foote was going back to continue his normal farm duties. Asked if he was planning to take a holiday, he said that in the meantime, the mohey would be put in the bank. When the news was heard over the radio, Mr. Foote's futher-in-law suggested that he verify it by telephone, there being one installed in a neighbour's house about 100 yards down the road. "Oh, it doesn't matter, we'll see it in tomorrow's paper," he said.
